July 2015 Accountability Update

It’s now time for another accountability report, this time for July.   I can’t believe it’s already halfway through August! I usually do these posts a bit earlier in the month, but I needed some time to receive all of my orders from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale (NAS) and decide what to keep. I wanted to only write about those items I plan on keeping, if at all possible.

Full Honesty and Accountability

Accountability can help us stick to our wardrobe & shopping goals.

For those who are new to the blog, these monthly reports are where I share what came into and left my closet during the previous month and how I did with my shopping budget.   It’s my way of keeping myself honest and on track with my wardrobe and shopping.  Sharing what I bought, what I culled, and how much I spent helps me to stay deliberate (my theme for 2015 – see my recent update on my progress HERE) with both my shopping and wardrobe management.

On Sales, Marketing Messages, FOMO, and Shopping

The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale (NAS) just ended this past Sunday.   This is not only Nordstrom’s biggest sale of the year, it’s also my favorite sale and I’ve been eagerly awaiting its arrival every summer for as long as I can remember.   Longtime readers of this blog may remember that I opted to sit out the sale back in 2013 and that I spent too much time, attention, and money on it last year.   This year, I set the intention of finding a happy medium between avoiding the sale altogether and overdoing it.

I ended up shopping the sale in person twice this year and also ordered some things online.   I will debrief how I fared toward the end of today’s post, but there are other topics I would like to cover first that are far more relevant to all of us.  Specifically, I would like to address how sales like NAS are marketed to customers and how the messages that consumers receive affect our buying habits.  I will share my reactions to the messages I saw in the pre-NAS marketing materials this year, as well as to the signage within my local Nordstrom.  I would also love to get your input on how retail sales are marketed and how you respond to the barrage of messages pressuring you to buy.

June 2015 Accountability Update

I hope all those in the U.S. had a great July 4th weekend (and that everyone else had a nice weekend, too).  Mine was more low-key than usual, as my sweet kitty Coco had to have five teeth extracted on Friday and I wanted to stay close by to keep an eye on her.   She is doing okay now and is on my lap purring as I type this… There must be something about July 4th and tooth issues in my family, as I suffered with an infected tooth and had to have a root canal last year!

My husband and I celebrated our 14th anniversary with a lunch on Coronado Island.  Since we got married on an island (Catalina – see a photo and read about my 2013 anniversary here), we make it a ritual to spend every anniversary on an island.  Our island jaunts have ranged from the faraway and exotic (the Caribbean, Hawaii) to the nearby and tame (Coronado, Balboa).  Here’s a photo of us from this year on Coronado, with downtown San Diego in the background (I was wearing one of my wardrobe pieces that have stood the test of time – the tank, as well as a favorite maxi skirt from last year).   It was a beautiful and sunny day and the crowds were definitely out, as evidenced by the other photo below (taken with the new camera my husband gave me as an anniversary present).

May 2015 Accountability Update

Thank you for all of your wonderful comments and emails in response to my last post on the topic of loneliness. I appreciate your feedback and insights very much.   I may not be able to reply to everyone individually due to the sheer volume of responses, but please know that I am grateful to all those who have reached out to me.  I am always touched by the outpouring of support I receive whenever I publish an emotional post.

It’s now time for another accountability report, this time for May.   For those who are new to the blog, these monthly reports are where I share what came into and left my closet during the previous month and how I did with my shopping budget.   It’s my way of keeping myself honest and on track with my wardrobe and shopping.

On Wardrobe Turnover – How Old Are the Items in Your Closet?

I received a lot of great comments on my last two posts, my experience with using the “KonMari Method” in my closet and my follow-on closet inventory.  A few of those comments have sparked topics for new posts, including today’s entry.

Meli asked me how many of the current items in my closet were there when I did my first closet inventory back in January 2013.   Not only did I want to be able to respond to Meli’s question, I also was quite curious myself…   So I took the time to make note of the years in which I purchased all of my current “out and about” clothing and shoes.   My findings are included in this very numbers-laden post.   I will first share my numbers by wardrobe category and then will round it all up into some grand totals.
